The first ever “Walking Football” tournament has been held at the Glasgow Green Football Centre with four teams showcasing the sport which is aimed at keeping people aged over-50 involved with football if they are not able to play the traditional game.
Though based on association football, the key difference is that if a player runs then they concede a free kick to the other side. This restriction, together with a ban on slide tackles, is aimed at avoiding injuries and allowing the sport to be played by those who are physically disadvantaged.
Walking Football promotes cardiovascular fitness whilst producing the least stress on the body. It also assists participants maintain an active lifestyle and if this pilot tournament is a success, more Walking Football sessions could be introduced.
